ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN NEWS) – Liberal firebrand Alan Grayson, considered Republicans’ worst nightmare during his time in Congress, has filed to run for his old seat against Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) in the Democratic primary.
Grayson told WESH-TV News that he is filing in Florida’s 9th Congressional Disrict, which he represented from 2012-2016, before he left it for a failed run for the U.S. Senate.
Grayson is seen by supporters as a gladiator in the arena of politics, ready to take on the party establishment, the Republican elite and political bullies to get things done.
He is chomping at the bit to reclaim his old job and wreak havoc in Washington. “If I hadn’t run for Senate, I’d be in Congress fighting Donald Trump tooth and nail right now,” he told WFTV. “I think Donald Trump should be impeached.”
Grayson told WESH-TV that polling suggests he remains popular in Congressional District 9, and that he believes he has more appeal among Hispanic voters than does Soto, who is of Puerto Rican descent, “because people know that I’ve done useful things.”
Grayson is so ready to get back into the fray that he reported $700,000 cash on hand in his open congressional campaign account as of March 31 this year. For the same time period, Soto had $365,000 in the bank, according to Politico.
As of this date, incumbent Congressman Darren Soto (D) , former Congressman Alan Grayson (D) and businessman Wayne Liebnitzky qualified for the upcoming election for Florida 9th Congressional District, which includes Osceola County, parts of Polk and Orange counties. Sean Alan Buchan (R) has not yet qualified before the May 4th deadline.
Soto, well aware of the hunt for his seat, will kick off his re-election campaign Thursday morning in Kissimmee.
The primary election is scheduled for August 28.
