MIAMI, Fla. (FNN NEWS) – Nikki Fried becomes Florida’s highest ranking Democrat and the first woman elected as Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture. On election night, Republican Commissioner of Agriculture candidate State Representative Matt Caldwell declared victory before all votes were counted. Fried took the lead later and declared victory as well. Florida’s Secretary of State ordered a machine recount and later a manual recount in the Commissioner’s race. Fried holds the lead against Caldwell by more than 6,000 votes, according to Florida’s Secretary of State website. Fried posted the following statement on Twitter Sunday:
“To everyone who put their lives on hold and worked to see the recount process through, to protect the integrity of our democracy—thank you.
I’m honored to serve as your next Commissioner of Agriculture. Now, we come together and work in union to govern for the people of Florida.” — Nikki Fried (@nikkifried) November 18, 2018
