Three Medal of Honor recipients will be honored at Coke Zero 400 Weekend

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) – Three Medal of Honor recipients will be honored during the upcoming  Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered By Coca-Cola on June 29-July 1 at Daytona International Speedway, a tradition that began in the 1970’s by Bill France Sr., the founder of Daytona International Speedway and NASCAR.

Being recognized this year are Captain Thomas Kelly, U.S. Navy (Vietnam), Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell, U.S. Army (Vietnam) and Colonel Walter Joseph Marm, U.S. Army (Vietnam).

Throughout the course of the Fourth of July weekend, these three recipients will participate in the following:

·         Medal of Honor luncheon on Friday, June 30 at the Bill France Room located in the Daytona International Speedway Ticket and Tours Building

·         Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series drivers’ meetings

·         Pre-race ceremonies for both Friday night’s Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race and Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

·         Autograph session in the UNOH Fanzone prior to Saturday night’s race.

This is the ninth straight year that Daytona International Speedway has recognized Medal of Honor recipients during the Coke Zero 400 Weekend Powered By Coca-Cola.

“These three men have gone beyond the call of duty in their service to our country,” Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile said. “Throughout the race weekend, it will be an honor and privilege for the NASCAR community to salute these three men for their extraordinary actions and service to our country.”

The Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration given by the United States Government, is bestowed upon a member of the United States Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life, above and beyond the call of duty, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States. More information on the recipients of the Medal of Honor may be found at http://www.cmohs.org/recipient-archive.php.
