ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) – NASCAR rookie Darrell “Bubba” Wallace wins NASCAR I-Drive Indoor Kart Racing against Orlando media members Friday afternoon.

Wallace kicked off Speedweeks at DAYTONA with an eight-lap win aboard an electric go-kart against nine media members.

According to a kart official, Wallace came within a second of the lap record held by a “Formula One driver,” who drove the course without competitors.

Wallace is set to become the first full-time African-American driver to race in the NASCAR Cup Series since Wendell Scott. He will drive the famed No. 43 car for Richard Petty Motorsports at the 60th annual DAYTONA 500 Sunday, February 18, 2018.
