A night of poetry filled the house at TasteCp, located in the heart of College Park and three miles from downtown Orlando. What better way to celebrate Downtown Orlando Fashion Week than to express fashion through elements of the arts? Top performers were ready to take off their hats and let their hair down as the open mic night began. Spoken word artists such as Jenna Babin, Jeff Compas, and Jontrice Robinson (below), our host for the night, expressed their artistic side through poetic words.

Meet The Boss

While enjoying the night with great Caribbean food, I was able to briefly interview TasteCp co-owner Ken Modeste, who took the restaurant’s reigns in 2008, according to Orlando Weekly. TasteCp is a California-style tapas (small plate) and Caribbean influenced restaurant. The Trinidad native gained success through education and work ethic, including a brief stay to Spain. He has an electrical degree from New York College, is a General Motors retiree, and owns many properties.

His business acumen qualifies him as a mentor to many young adults, but he doesn’t consider himself a mentor, but someone “that would like information given to me.” Like most leaders, he’s hungry to learn more new things himself. His passion for growth and development leadership influences others, including his employees. With his help, one recently moved to New York with a great job opportunity.

He stresses the importance of community involvement and strongly encourages mainstream art and giving back. His methods include donations to Haiti.

His Orlando community outreach includes a Monday night Jazz Jam every week with live band and music. For more information on Taste events, visit the website.
