ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN NEWS) – An elected Democrat financially supporting the Republican Party is typically taboo, but it happened Saturday. Orlando District 6 Commissioner and Orlando mayoral candidate Sam Ings raised eyebrows after the Orange County Republican Party thanked him for his campaign’s $1,100 financial contribution.
Commissioner Ings attended the Orange County Republican Party’s “Trump Defender Gala and 2019 Annual Lincoln Day Dinner” Saturday night at the Westgate Lakes Resort. His campaign paid to reserve a table and a full page ad for the event.
The Orange County Republican Party announced Monday that the event successfully raised over $100,000. Congressman Matt Gaetz, who led last week’s group of 30 House Republicans to storm the House Impeachment hearings, spoke at Saturday’s gala and was awarded ”Trump Defender of the Year” by the Orange County Republican Executive Committee.
“Given all the issues surrounding Donald Trump, why would he support something like that?” Orange County Democratic Party Chairman Wes Hodge told FNN News in a phone interview. “[And] if he was elected, would he be siding with the Republicans on certain issues, [such as] trying to oust some members on the GOAA Board, or would he stand with the voters on issues?”
Commissioner Ings shares the mayoral ballot with Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and former U.S. Navy veteran Aretha Simons. Orlando City Commission District 6 is also up for election, which happens Tuesday, November 5. Early voting began today.
