Florida Gators Win 2025 NCAA Championship Behind Youngest Head Coach in Decades

Willie DavidHOUSTON, TX (FNN SPORTS) – The Florida Gators are the 2025 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champions, overcoming a 12-point deficit to defeat the Houston Cougars 65-63 in a nail-biting national title game Monday night.
The Orange and Blue clinched their third national title in school history, joining the elite ranks once again with a dramatic comeback fueled by heart, hustle, and a trio of determined guards.
Too Many Turnovers, But Never Out
Florida’s early-game woes nearly cost them the championship. The Gators committed nine first-half turnovers, with Alex Condon traveling three times and Walter Clayton Jr. adding two more.
Despite the sloppy start, Florida trailed by just three points at the break—a testament to their resiliency and a sign of what was to come. In the second half, the script flipped, as the Gators cleaned things up, committing just four turnovers while forcing nine from Houston in return.
Will Richard’s Legacy Game
Will Richard put the team on his back in the first half, scoring 14 of Florida’s 28 first-half points and hitting 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. While Clayton and Martin combined for only two points early, Richard’s heroics kept Florida within striking distance.
Richard’s journey with the Gators comes full circle with this win. The first of the “Big Three” transfers, Richard has grown into a complete player under head coach Todd Golden — and sealed his Florida legacy with crucial free throws and steals in crunch time.
Mama, There Goes That Man: Walter Clayton Jr.
Though Clayton finished the first half scoreless, he came alive late, scoring a game-tying three-pointer with three minutes to play and delivering a pair of and-1 finishes that swung momentum in Florida’s favor.
With clutch performances throughout the tournament, Clayton cements himself as arguably the best guard in Florida history, now enshrined forever in Gainesville’s lore.
Foul Trouble Turns the Tide
Houston played a disciplined first half, but things unraveled late. In just nine seconds, the Cougars committed three fouls, putting their bigs in jeopardy and giving Florida a critical advantage at the line.
Florida, by contrast, played clean defense, committing just 10 fouls the entire game and hitting 81% of their free throws—a difference-maker down the stretch.
Let the Golden Era Begin
In just three seasons, Todd Golden has returned Florida Basketball to national dominance. The 39-year-old becomes the youngest head coach to win a national championship since Jim Valvano in 1983, doing so with a balanced, fearless squad that knocked off two No. 1 seeds—Auburn and Houston—on the road to glory.
What Golden has done in Gainesville has Gator Nation believing again. Florida is back—and here to stay.
What’s Next? Parades and Glory
With their championship secured, the Gators will return to Gainesville this week for a victory parade and celebration at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Fans can expect appearances from Todd Golden, the full roster, university leaders, and Florida legends.
The University of Florida is already planning commemorative gear, campus events, and tributes to the 2025 squad.

October 24, 2026Shooting struggles and a costly third quarter leave Orlando winless through two games under first-year coach Sean Sweeney
ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) — A new coaching era has opened with consecutive losses for the Orlando Magic, who fell 115-93 to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night at Kia Center.
Orlando dropped to 0-2 under first-year head coach Sean Sweeney as shooting struggles again slowed its offense. The Magic also struggled with turnovers and missed free throws, repeating problems from their season-opening loss to Atlanta. Yahoo Sports

Third-quarter struggles prove costly

Carter leads Orlando
Wendell Carter Jr. finished with 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Magic. Franz Wagner scored 18 points before fouling out, while Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs added 14 apiece.
Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels each scored 15 points for Minnesota, which improved to 2-0. Rudy Gobert contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Reuters
Perimeter shooting remains a concern
Orlando made just eight of its 39 attempts from 3-point range, shooting 20.5%. Minnesota connected on 37.8% of its attempts from beyond the arc. reuters.com
Two games offer a limited measure of Sweeney’s tenure, but the early results identify an immediate challenge: improving offensive execution and preventing difficult stretches from becoming decisive runs.
