FNN SPORTSDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In one of the most electrifying finishes of the season, 23-year-old Harrison Burton captured his first NASCAR Cup Series victory, overtaking two-time champion Kyle Busch on the final lap in an overtime thriller at Daytona International Speedway. The win not only marked a career milestone for Burton but also delivered the historic 100th victory for his legendary Wood Brothers Racing team.

A Night of High Drama:
The Coke Zero Sugar 400 was packed with intense action, featuring multiple lead changes, massive wrecks, and thrilling passes that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The race had a significant impact on the NASCAR Playoff picture, with only one race remaining before the 16 drivers advancing to the championship are decided.
Burton’s path to victory was sealed when he received a powerful push from first-time Cup Series starter Parker Retzlaff on the backstretch during the final lap. This allowed Burton’s No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford to pull ahead of race leader Kyle Busch. Despite Busch’s efforts to reclaim the lead, Burton held on to win by a mere .047 seconds.
Historic Win for Burton and Wood Brothers:
This victory secured Burton an automatic spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, a remarkable turnaround after entering the race outside the top-20 in points. The win was celebrated by his competitors, with many congratulating him on pit road and in victory lane. An emotional Burton expressed his gratitude to Wood Brothers Racing, calling the win “amazing” and looking forward to the Playoffs with renewed determination.
Race Highlights:
- The race saw 16 different leaders and 40 lead changes, with Burton leading only the final lap.
- Two major multi-car wrecks, known as “The Big One,” dramatically altered the race, eliminating several frontrunners.
- A crash involving Team Penske’s Austin Cindric and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Josh Berry set up the overtime finish, with Berry’s car flipping on the backstretch.
- Only five cars crossed the finish line without being involved in an accident.
Playoff Implications:
Burton’s victory reshuffled the Playoff standings, with Bubba Wallace now 17th in points and needing a strong finish at Darlington to secure a Playoff spot. Kyle Busch, despite three consecutive top-five finishes, remains 106 points below the cutoff line, putting him in a must-win situation next weekend.
Looking Ahead:
The regular season concludes next Sunday with the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. The race will determine the final Playoff field, with Tyler Reddick, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliott battling for the regular season championship.

NISEY LOU S.South Florida held an early advantage and reclaimed the lead late, but UTSA’s second-half execution proved to be the difference Thursday night at the Alamodome.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (FNN SPORTS) — South Florida gave itself a chance to steal a road win Thursday night, but UTSA answered when it mattered most, defeating the Bulls 31-24 at the Alamodome.
USF struck first behind D.J. Crowther, who broke through for a 15-yard touchdown run to give the Bulls an early advantage. Quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. helped keep South Florida’s offense moving throughout the night as the Bulls continued to respond whenever UTSA threatened to take control.
USF stayed within reach from start to finish, but the second half belonged to a UTSA offense that consistently found a way to finish drives.
UTSA Finds Its Rhythm
Running back A’Marion Peterson became the difference-maker for the Roadrunners, finishing with 92 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
UTSA scored on every second-half possession, gradually shifting momentum away from a USF team that continued to battle offensively. The Roadrunners leaned heavily on their ground game while keeping the Bulls from building any sustained separation.
