ATLANTA, Ga. (FNN NEWS) – 2019 has become a historic year for women of color in beauty pageants. The most notable top competitive beauty pageants – Miss World, Miss America, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe, have all crowned black women as winners for the year.
It is a monumental win for diversity around the globe, especially since beauty pageants originally did not allow participation from women of color. Pageants originated as far back as the 1920s, yet black women have only been allowed to participate and become more prevalent in these competitions in the last 50 years. Despite this gesture towards inclusion and diversity, opposition arose after the organization’s decision to allow women of all races to compete.
This historic group of women of color consists of 2019 Miss World Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica, 2019 Miss America Nia Franklin of New York, 2019 Miss USA Cheslie Kryst of North Carolina, 2019 Miss Teen USA Kaliegh Garris of Connecticut, and 2019 Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa.
