President Trump Signs HALT Fentanyl Act Into Law; ‘Queen of Versailles’ Jackie Siegel Delivers Remarks at White House

Trump officially signed the bipartisan HALT Fentanyl Act into law, permanently classifying all fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. The legislation is seen as a major step in combating the deadly opioid epidemic that continues to take thousands of lives across the United States.
“This is delivering another defeat for the savage drug smugglers, criminals, and cartels,” President Trump said during the ceremony. “We’ll be getting the drug dealers, pushers, and peddlers off our streets, and we will not rest until we end the drug overdose epidemic.”
Jackie Siegel of ‘Queen of Versailles’ Delivers Powerful Testimony
Among those joining the president was Florida philanthropist Jackie Siegel, best known from the 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles. Siegel has experienced profound personal loss due to the opioid crisis, including the recent deaths of her sister, Jessica Mallery, from a fentanyl-laced cocaine overdose, and her daughter, Victoria, who died in 2015 at age 18 from an overdose.
“It’s been a rough time,” Siegel shared with attendees. “But it’s turned me into more of a fighter—to carry on my husband’s legacy and the legacies of other families to save lives. I’m turning my pain into passion.”
Following the loss of Victoria, Siegel co-founded the Victoria’s Voice Foundation, a nonprofit advocating for youth drug prevention, mental health support, and overdose education. Her sister’s passing in April 2024 came just days after the death of her husband, Westgate Resorts founder David Siegel, who died at age 89 after a battle with cancer.
Orlando Attorney Dan Newlin Named Ambassador to Colombia, Attends White House Ceremony
Also in attendance at the White House signing was high-profile Orlando attorney Dan Newlin, an Honorary Deputy Sheriff, who was appointed by President Trump to serve as Ambassador to Colombia—a country central to international drug trafficking efforts. Newlin’s appointment signals the administration’s intensified focus on foreign partnerships to disrupt fentanyl pipelines before they reach American communities.
The HALT Fentanyl Act received strong bipartisan support, passing the House 321-104 and the Senate 84-16. The new law grants law enforcement agencies permanent tools to prosecute distributors of all fentanyl-related compounds, which have been responsible for a surge in overdose deaths across the U.S.
Parents like Greg Swan and Anne Fundner also shared their personal stories during the ceremony, applauding the legislation and President Trump’s commitment to action. “Thank you for keeping America safe for our children,” said Fundner. “This is what we voted for.”

According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the conversation focused on maritime security and commercial shipping in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
