Willie DavidATLANTIC CITY, NJ (August 26, 2015) – The Miss America Organization, dick clark productions and ABC announced today that recording superstar Nick Jonas will serve as the official Music Curator for the “2016 Miss America Competition.” As Music Curator, Nick will personally select the music that will accompany the Swimsuit and Evening Gown competitions. He will also provide commentary throughout the evening on his music selections and the thought process behind each song. Nick joins previously announced host Chris Harrison and celebrity judges Brett Eldredge, Taya Kyle, Kevin O’Leary, Amy Purdy and Zendaya. Additional talent and judges, including Harrison’s co-host for the “2016 Miss America Competition,” will be announced in the coming weeks.
The “2016 Miss America Competition” returns to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 (9:00 – 11:00p.m./ET) on the ABC Television Network. The evening will be filled with glitz and glam as 52 women compete for the coveted crown and scholarship.
Island Records Artist, Nick Jonas introduced himself as a fully formed solo artist on his hit self-titled debut, released in November 2014. The critically-acclaimed album includes double-platinum smash single and #1 U.S. radio hit, “Jealous” and his sultry second chart-climbing U.S. radio single, “Chains.” Jonas attributes his album’s darker overtones partially to the fact that while he was recording, he was also shooting the gritty television show ‘Kingdom’ – a mixed martial arts drama that premiered on DirecTV’s Audience Network last fall and was recently picked up for two additional seasons. Jonas recently earned two more high-profile roles, a guest starring role in Fox’s upcoming horror-comedy series, ‘Scream Queens’ and a lead in the James Franco produced film, ‘Goat’. Showing no signs of slowing down this year, the breakout solo powerhouse joined forces with west coast rapper-producer Sage the Gemini to release their summer collaboration, “Good Thing” and in partnership with Island Records, Demi Lovato, and long-time manager, Phil McIntyre, Jonas helped launch his own artist-centric record label, Safehouse Records. This fall, Jonas will embark on the NICK JONAS “LIVE IN CONCERT” TOUR, which kicks off September 6 in Hershey, PA. The tour will feature special guest Bebe Rexha and make stops in cities across the U.S. and Canada with dates in New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and San Francisco.
Voting for America’s Choice continues through September 10 at 11:59p.m. ET. For the first time in Miss America history, fans have the opportunity to cast their vote entirely on social media for America’s Choice. The winner of America’s Choice will move forward to the Top 15 in the competition. Interfaith Group Asks Starbucks to Drop Vegan Milk Surcharge
Published
4 years agoon
May 13, 2022BOSTON (AP) — A group of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish leaders is asking Starbucks to stop charging extra for vegan milk alternatives, saying the practice amounts to a tax on people who have embraced plant-based lifestyles.
In a statement issued Friday, an interfaith coalition led by Nevada-based Hindu activist Rajan Zed pressed the coffee chain to end the surcharges it called “unethical and unfair.”
“A coffee company should not be in the business of taxing individuals who had chosen the plant-based lifestyle,” said Zed’s statement, which was also signed by Thomas W. Blake, an Episcopal priest; Greek Orthodox clergyman Stephen R. Karcher; Buddhist priest Matthew Fisher; and Jewish rabbi ElizaBeth Webb Beyer.
The religious leaders cited numerous reasons why some Starbucks customers prefer alternatives to dairy, including dietary restrictions, ethical issues, environmental concerns, lactose intolerance, milk allergies and animal welfare.
Those who want plant-based milk should not have to pay more, they said, calling on the Seattle-based company’s CEO, Howard Schultz, and board chair Mellody Hobson to immediately drop the surcharge.
Starbucks outlets in the United States typically charge 50 cents to a dollar more for drinks made with plant-based milks.
Starbucks doesn’t charge for a splash of nondairy milk, including soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk and oat milk, though it does levy a surcharge for customized beverages made largely with those substitutes, spokesperson Megan Adams told The Associated Press.
It is not the first time Starbucks’ surcharge has riled the public. On Tuesday, activist and actor James Cromwell glued his hand to the counter of a Starbucks franchise in New York City to protest the practice.
Cromwell, 81, later used a knife to scrape it off. Police said there were no arrests.
