Willie DavidTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (FNN) — Senator LaVon Bracy Davis and Representative Mitch Rosenwald have filed legislation aimed at expanding access to the My Safe Florida Home Program by allowing homeowners to reapply when applications were previously deemed abandoned or withdrawn due to errors or omissions.
The measure, SB 1148/HB 1045, would modify program rules to permit subsequent applications when the original filing was rejected because of compliance-related mistakes, provided there is good cause and the applicant corrects the issue in a timely manner.
Expanding Access to Homeowner Assistance
The My Safe Florida Home Program is a state initiative that provides eligible Florida homeowners with inspections and grant funding to help strengthen their homes against storms while reducing insurance costs. The program is administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services.
Current rules allow for reapplication if an application was denied or withdrawn due to errors or omissions. However, the proposed legislation would also allow reapplication when an application was deemed abandoned or withdrawn because of similar compliance-related issues.
Addressing Bureaucratic Barriers
“At a time when Florida’s families are struggling with rising insurance costs, we cannot allow bureaucratic technicalities to block access to affordability tools,” said Bracy Davis, a Democrat from Ocoee.
The bill responds to concerns from homeowners who were unable to submit a new application after their original submission was closed due to misunderstandings or reasonable mistakes regarding program requirements.
Focus on Seniors and Low-Income Homeowners
Rosenwald, a Democrat from Oakland Park, said the legislation is intended to help vulnerable homeowners who rely on the program for financial relief.
“This program can be a lifeline for seniors and low-income homeowners,” Rosenwald said. “In response to Floridians reporting that they were blocked from submitting a new application because of a misunderstanding or reasonable mistake concerning program compliance, I filed this glitch bill.”
If approved, the legislation would ensure more homeowners have access to financial assistance aimed at strengthening homes and improving insurance affordability across Florida.

FNN SPORTSTAMPA, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Carolina Panthers 23-20 on Sunday, dropping to 7-8 on the season after another tightly contested finish.
Close Loss Continues Trend
The defeat marked Tampa Bay’s seventh game this season decided by three points or fewer, tying the 1979 Buccaneers for the most such games in a single season in franchise history. Tampa Bay also saw its four-game road winning streak against divisional opponents — dating back to last season — come to an end. That streak had been tied for the longest in team history.
Offensive Performances and Milestones
Tampa Bay rushed for 169 yards on 33 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per attempt, one of its strongest rushing performances of the season. Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 18 of 26 passes for 145 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while adding a season-high 45 rushing yards. His 7.0 yards per carry on the season leads all NFL quarterbacks with at least 40 rushing attempts.
Wide receiver Mike Evans caught five passes for 31 yards and a touchdown, the 107th receiving score of his career, moving him into the top 10 all-time in NFL history. Chris Godwin Jr. also had five receptions, surpassing both 600 career catches and 7,500 receiving yards, joining Evans as the only Buccaneers to reach those marks. Rookie Emeka Egbuka led the team with 40 receiving yards and moved within 90 yards of becoming the third rookie in franchise history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards.
Defensive Effort and Special Teams Highlights
Linebacker Lavonte David recorded 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and a sack, surpassing 1,700 career tackles and moving into third place all-time in tackles for loss since 2008. SirVocea Dennis added eight tackles and a sack, while Yaya Diaby posted nine pressures, continuing a career-long streak of games with at least one quarterback hit.
On special teams, kicker Chase McLaughlin went 2-for-2 on field goals, including a 50-yarder that set an NFL record with 11 consecutive made field goals of 50 yards or more in a single season. Returner Kameron Johnson averaged 33.7 yards on three kick returns, producing Tampa Bay’s two longest returns of the season.
