ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) – UCF came into Saturday’s game desiring another win, but Tulane came into it desperately needing one.
The Knights are 5-3 on the season, 3-2 in the AAC; while the Tulane Green Wave are 1-7 on the season, while 0-4 in the AAC.
In each team’s first respective possessions, they converted their third downs to keep the drive going, but didn’t score.
On UCF’s second possession, with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter, they got on the board first with a Mikey Keene’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Ryan O’Keefe. With the extra point, UCF led Tulane 7-0.
Both teams’ defense were stingy in the second quarter, so neither scored. On Tulane’s final possession, the Green Wave attempted a field goal, but the kick fell short of the goal posts.
The score remained 7-0 at halftime.
Tulane came alive in the third quarter with their first touchdown with a snap to Tyjae Spears, who ran it up the middle eight yards for a touchdown. With just 4:26 left in the third, Tulane’s Merek Glover added a field goal, giving Tulane a 10-7 lead.
With just over four minutes left in the third, UCF got possession of the ball again and quarterback Michael Keene covered major ground with a 50-yard pass to Brandon Johnson.
UCF nearly killed their chances for victory in the fourth quarter. After a hard-fought touchdown, the score was utterly nullified due to a holding penalty, returning the lead to Tulane.
On UCF’s next possession, Tulane’s defense gave another hard fight. UCF came close to another touchdown several times, but to no avail. Breakthrough finally came for UCF with 5:55 left in the game: Michael Keene made a 25-yard pass up the middle to Brandon Johnson for the touchdown. After the extra point, UCF regained their lead, 14-10.
Tulane had no answer for UCF, despite several attempts, making the final score 14-10, UCF.
UCF next heads on the road to face SMU next Saturday at 11am EST, while Tulane returns home to host Tulsa next Saturday at 3pm CST. The Knights return home November 20th to host UConn at 3pm EST.
