Jacksonville Jaguars Lose in First Home Game Without Capacity Limits Since 2019

The Jacksonville Jaguars fall to the Denver Broncos 23-13 in their first home game at TIAA Bank Field this season. This marks the 17th loss in a row for the Jags, a streak which dates back to week two of last season.

Fans seemed energized by the new look of the team, which now includes Coach Urban Meyer and rookie QB Trevor Lawrence, two individuals who rarely suffered losses during their college football careers. In addition, while the stadium wasn’t sold out, the attendance at 58,461 was still markedly higher than last season, when COVID-19 protocols reduced capacity to less than 16,000 per game in order to allow for social distancing. This was the first game before a full capacity crowd at TIAA Bank Field since 2019. In fact, only 18 of the 53 players on the Jaguars’ roster have played a home game without capacity limits prior to today’s matchup.

The Jaguars scored the first touchdown of the game, a 25 yard Trevor Lawrence pass to WR Marvin Jones Jr. for a touchdown. K Josh Lambo’s extra point put the Jags up 7-0 on this beautiful, sunny afternoon. Fans got particularly loud as they cheered a Josh Allen sack of Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater late in the first quarter, resulting in a 16 yard loss. But the Broncos did manage to score a 32 yard field goal by K Brandon McManus, ending the first quarter down 7-3.

In the second quarter, Josh Lambo missed a 52 yard field goal, which went wide right. But fans were energized by Shaquill Griffin’s near interception of a Teddy Bridgewater pass to Courtland Sutton. But the only scoring in the quarter was by Denver, with a Bridgewater touchdown pass to Tim Patrick, putting the visiting team up 10-7, as fans tried to stay dry as the rain started pouring down. Lambo missed another field goal shortly before halftime, as the ball went wide left.

The Broncos scored the first touchdown after the half as Bridgewater threw a 14 yard pass to TE Noah Fant. The extra point by McManus put the Broncos up 17-7. A Jaguars scoring drive ended as the Broncos’ Kareem Jackson intercepted a Trevor Lawrence pass. McManus ended that Broncos scoring drive with a 46 yard field goal, extending their lead to 20-7.

In the fourth quarter, Lawrence suffered his second interception as the Broncos’ Pat Surtain II picked off a pass intended for WR Tyron Johnson. Their scoring drive was capped off with a 40 yard McManus field goal, putting the Broncos ahead 23-7. The Jaguars pumped up the home team crowd with a 102 yard kickoff return by Jamal Agnew, to narrow the lead to 23-13. The team attempted and missed a two-point conversion.

Trevor Lawrence finished with 118 yards and one touchdown. The Jaguars’ rushing leader was James Robinson with 47 yards, while Marvin Jones, Jr. led the team’s receiving with 55 yards. TE James O’Shaughnessy suffered an ankle injury and missed most of the game. His status is uncertain for next week.

The Jaguars return to TIAA Bank Field Sunday, 9/26 to host the Arizona Cardinals at 1:00 p.m. For more photos from today’s game, be sure to follow Florida National News on Facebook.
