TAMPA, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) – Like all NFL teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers reported for their first day of training camp Thursday morning, with one immediate difference: starting quarterback Jameis Winston wasn’t first in the rotation. He did do reps with all three groups, but the focus was on Koetter’s interim quarterbacks Ryan and Ryan–Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Griffin.
While the players went through their reps and showed promise for the first day, not much of it was discussed, given the NFL’s ruling in the recent Jameis Winston scandal. The media focused on the scandal more than anything else during both Head Coach Koetter’s and Winston’s press conferences.
“I’m disappointed…but we’ll deal with it,” Coach Koetter said. Concerning training camp, he told reporters he’s excited to have all the guys back. “I think it’ll be a great season…but we’ll see what happens when we start playing real games.”
Winston held steadfastly to the script, no matter how many questions were hurled at him in different ways. In a nutshell, he apologized to his teammates, and he wants to grow and move forward from here. For the fans, “I tell the fans to continue to support this team, and to support me.”
Winston is suspended for the first three games, but Coach Koetter didn’t confirm whether Winston was guaranteed to start in Week 4. Koetter said he’ll get to Week 4 when Week 4 comes.
