Orange County Commissioner Victoria Siplin Condemns President Trump’s Divisive Remarks About Haiti, EL Salvador, African Countries

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – (FNN NEWS) – President Donald Trump remarks during a recent White House meeting regarding an immigration deal that would include protections for people from Haiti, El Salvador, and some nations in Africa, wanted to know why he should accept immigrants from “shithole countries” rather than from places like Norwa.

Trump’s ‘shithole’ comment was denounced across the globe by foreign governments, including Democrats and even some Republicans. However, Trump denied that he made the comments Friday.

Commissioner Victoria Siplin Response

On the eve of the commemorative day of the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti, I find President Trump’s reported comments about Haiti, El Salvador and African countries unacceptable and inaccurate.

Haiti has long history with the United States, dating back to the American Revolutionary War, where 500 heroic Haitians volunteered to fight alongside the American troops for America’s independence.  Haiti is a country with rich natural resources and remains a desirable tourism destination.  While President Trump’s reported comments are harsh, he is regrettably misinformed about one of the United States closest neighboring allies.

Victoria P. Siplin is the Commissioner of Orange County District 6, which encompasses the heart of Central Florida hospitality and tourism industry that employs a significant number of hard-working and tax paying immigrants, specifically Haitians.

In 2014, Siplin made history as the first Haitian elected to Orange County Government as the Commissioner of District 6.
