ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN NEWS) – Orlando City faced Toronto FC at Orlando City Stadium Saturday, fresh off a 4-1 loss against Los Angeles FC and short four key players. Defenders Lamine Sane and Jonathan Spector are out with injuries, midfielder Uri Rosell is suspended and midfielder Justin Meram was kept out of the game entirely–a decision made by Lions head coach James O’Connor. The 23,000-plus crowd wanted to see a win, especially since the team’s last win was back on May 6th.
Toronto FC came to Saturday’s game off of a 2-2 draw against Sporting Kansas City.
The penalties began early, with Orlando’s Chris Schuller landing a yellow card in the 6th minute. However, Orlando goalie Earl Edwards, Jr. caught Toronto’s penalty with little to no effort. Saturday’s game was Edward’s second MLS start in his career. The last was back in 2017.
Orlando’s Chris Schuller put the Lions on the board first in the 34th minute with the assist by Dom Dwyer.
Despite Toronto’s rigorous efforts, they didn’t have an answer for Orlando, leaving the score at 1-0 at halftime. During the break, Toronto subbed in Jay Chapman for Ryan Telfer.
Orlando City widened the lead early in the second half with a 48th minute head-on goal by Dom Dwyer, who showcased his gymnastics skills with a cartwheel and backflip in celebration of the goal.
In the 54th minute, Toronto’s Chapman was issued a yellow card. In the 56th minute Orlando subbed in Dillon Powers for Tony Rocha.
Toronto’s Michael Bradley was issued a yellow card in the 67th minute for knocking Dom Dwyer in the shoulder as he ran the ball down the field. Bradley was immediately subbed out for Liam Fraser.
In the 76th and 77th minutes, both teams got some subs in. In the 76th minute, Toronto subbed in Tosaint Ricketts for Nicolas Hasler and Orlando subbed Donny Toia in for Will Johnson.
In the 83rd minute, Toronto’s Zavaleta was issued a yellow card for grabbing Toia around the waist to pull him away from the ball.
After Chris Mueller’s epic near-goal assist to Mohamed El-Munir (who missed the ball completely), Orlando subbed in Stefano Pinho for Dom Dwyer in the 86th minute.
Despite the vigorous challenge Toronto presented, Orlando could breathe a sigh of relief finally having a win at home.
Orlando City starts a two-game road trip Wednesday, July 18 against Philadelphia Union for the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals then goes to Columbus next Saturday before returning home to face New York City FC Thursday, July 26 at 8pm.
