Review: Cage the Elephant Energizes and Preps Tampa Crowd for Beck with Big Antics

TAMPA (FNN NEWS) – In the midst of hurricane season, Thursday, August 29th turned into a beautiful summer night for the best alternative rock music and a swooning crowd of 11,000. Kicking off the concert that evening was Sunflower Bean and Spoon, followed by one of the most anticipated bands of the night, Night Running Tour co-headliner Cage the Elephant. Lead singer Matt Shultz hit the stage with energy so palpable that it pulsed through the audience, passionately singing the band’s top songs.

Cage the Elephant guitarist Brad Shultz led the band into hit song ‘Broken Boy” to open their performance. The band next hooked the crowd with “Cold Cold Cold”, “Ready to Let Go” and then ambiance shifted with phone lights glowing in the air when the band began playing “House of Glass”. Matt engaged the crowd even further as he performed “Come A Little Closer” and came more and more out of his clothing, stripping seven layers to be exact, mesmerizing the audience with a smoke show and antics–“very Beck-like,” as many of the attendees were saying. The beautiful thing about this tour is the love and energy that translated to the audience.

Matt has always idolized Beck. According to recent interviews, when the band began creating their first album, he told producers, “I want to sound like Beck’s ‘Loser’.” It’s safe to say that the band has had the ability to create Beck-like music and even put their own spin on it, seeing as the band is constantly in comparison to Beck and having the pleasure to now tour with him.

Beck hit the stage to wrap up such an electric night! Opening with hit song “Loser” and giving the crowd all that they expected from Beck and more. “I’ve seen Beck three times live and it’s never short of energetic and entertaining!” said longtime fan Diane in the audience. Everyone got excited to hear and sing in correlation with Beck, “Devil’s Haircut.” Fans couldn’t help but jump around and smile!

All in all, this concert proved to be worth all the anticipation and being listed as one of the top concerts of the summer!
