Orlando, Fla. — Today, Mayor Andrew Gillum proudly received the support of the sheriffs of Leon County, Alachua County, Orange County, Osceola County, and Gadsden County. The sheriffs recognized Mayor Gillum’s commitment to working with law enforcement to root out crime and corruption in Tallahassee and how he significantly reduced violent crime by 24 percent.
“As sheriff of Leon County, I have personally worked with Andrew, and have watched him work to build a safer community for our kids, work side by side with law enforcement to tackle violent crime, and stand up for common sense gun reform. As governor, I know he will carry the same level of integrity and dedication to the safety of all Floridians” said Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil.
“I’m proud to endorse Mayor Gillum. As Mayor, Andrew Gillum fought corruption and reduced violent crime by 24 percent and as Governor. He will take on the gun lobby, just as he did in Tallahassee. I’ve spent 40 years in law enforcement, and I trust Andrew Gillum to protect the people of Florida,” said Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell.
“After 37 years in law enforcement, I know what it takes to keep our communities secure. Mayor Gillum brought the police and community together, reduced crime and took on the gun lobby to keep our families safer. I took an oath to protect the public, and that is why I support Andrew Gillum for governor,” said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings.
“Mayor Gillum has tirelessly worked to bring down violent crime rate in Tallahassee and has worked side by side with the police to crack down on violent criminals and gangs. I trust Andrew Gillum to keep our families safe,” said Osceola County Sheriff Russell H. Gibson.
“As a law enforcement officer, I know Andrew Gillum will protect our state because as mayor of Tallahassee, he brought our community together to reduce violent crime and gang activity. Ron DeSantis’ attacks are just not true as Andrew Gillum has worked with law enforcement to crackdown on politicians who break the law. Andrew Gillum is the right for choice for Florida,” said Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young.
As Mayor, Andrew Gillum helped lower violent crime through increased investments in law enforcement, community policing, re-entry programs, and an expansion of social service funding. He has consistently opposed the gun lobby and called for common sense gun safety reforms like banning assault weapons, expanding universal background checks, banning bump stocks, and preventing domestic abusers from acquiring handguns.
