Recount or Runoff? 5 Votes Separate Candidates in Orange County Commission District 1 Race

Published

on

ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN) – The Orange County Canvassing Board will meet Thursday afternoon to finalize vote totals in the tight Orange County Commission District 1 race between incumbent Commissioner Nicole Wilson and challenger Austin Arthur. With only five votes separating them—Wilson with 14,052 and Arthur with 14,047—the race may head to a recount or even a runoff.

District 1 on the Orange County Commission includes areas like Horizon West, Winter Garden, Oakland, and Windermere.

The outcome could change depending on ballots still being processed. The deadline to cure discrepancies with vote-by-mail signatures is 5 p.m. today, and any cured ballots will be added to the totals. Provisional ballots are also under review, and the board will decide whether they are accepted. Additionally, there are 28 write-in votes that could impact the results, submitted by Stephen Davis, a former fire battalion chief.

If the margin remains razor-thin, a machine recount is expected on Friday. Alternatively, if neither candidate secures over 50% of the vote, the race could go to a runoff in November.

Tune in to Florida National News for updates. The meeting will be livestreamed on the Orange County Supervisor of Elections website starting at 4:30 p.m.
