Hispanic Federation, State Elected Officials rally in Orlando for US Government to help Puerto Rico

ORLANDO, FLORIDA – On Tuesday morning, State Representative Victor Torres, Jr., State Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor Daisy Morales and State Senator Darren Soto (all Puerto Rican origin) gathered in Orlando with members of the Hispanic Federation for a rally to encourage US Government to help Puerto Rico with its massive $72 billion public debt.

The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a United States territory located in the northeastern Caribbean. The island is facing a straggling financial crisis.

Rallies were held in Orlando, New York and Washington, DC, calling on US Government to help Puerto Rico. Central Florida’s Puerto Rican population (includes Orlando) is more than 300,000, the second largest in the U.S. after New York City.

We’re talking about families, about the financial stability of an island where 3.5 million U.S. citizens reside and who’s options for work and survival will only shrink by the minute if we don’t act,” said Zoe Colon, a Director with the Hispanic Federation.

The group wants the U.S. government to put people living in Puerto Rico on a more equal footing compared to people who live in the U.S.

“Our message is clear, the federal government needs to step up. The house has still not allowed for a change in the bankruptcy laws to allow Puerto Rico to be able to negotiate with their debtors,” said State Senator Darren Soto (Orlando).

The group says the island’s mounting health care crisis, which includes cuts or reductions to vital programs like Medicare Advantage. Normalizing low Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates to equal those backing the US will help cut the debt.

Chapter 9 bankruptcy laws and healthcare reform can do a lot to help Puerto Rico solve this debt crisis, said State Representative Victor Torres, Jr. (Orlando)

Puerto Rico imports 85% of its food even though most of the land is fertile.

“If the creditors halt food exports for lack of payment, Puerto Rico will starve,” said State Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor Daisy Morales (Orlando).

Food security for the island is at risk and the US Government needs to act now, Supervisor Morales expressed.

As CBS reports New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio demanded President Obama and Congress immediately come to the island’s fiscal rescue.”

“It’s the federal government’s obligation to act, because they can’t stand idly by and watch Puerto Rico fail,” de Blasio told a crowd of hundreds of Puerto Rico boosters gathered on the steps of City Hall.
