Soto Applauds US Department of Defense Cornerstone Award of up to $289 Million to Osceola County

Published

on

KISSIMMEE, FL – Today, Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) applauded the decision by the U.S. Department of Defense to award Osceola County a five-year Cornerstone award with an initial funding allocation of $3.65 million and a spending ceiling of $120 million. This positions Osceola County at the forefront of the nation’s efforts to produce next-generation microchips for the U.S. military, simultaneously transforming the lives and fortunes of the community. Notably, the contract offers options for an additional $169 million, potentially resulting in a total award of $289 million.

“In FL-09, we are leading the way to develop next generation aerospace microchips, create new high-paying jobs, and defend our nation. We are proud to see Osceola County receive a Cornerstone award by U.S. Department of Defense contract to help our nation continue moving towards a strong, secure domestic semiconductor industry. Through their public-private partnership with SkyWater and BRIDG, the county will have the opportunity to expand their state-of-the-art semiconductor packaging capabilities at NeoCity and establish Central Florida as a hub for this technology,” said Rep. Soto. “As work begins on projects funded through this contract, numerous high-quality jobs in research, development, manufacturing, and more will become available to Central Floridians and help keep our local economy strong.”

NeoCity serves as the conduit for changing lives in Osceola County and the region as whole, which is why there has been united support from the business community, academia, and everyday citizens. NeoCity acts as the engine for cultivating a highly skilled workforce, capable of claiming high-paying careers that are being created. This, in turn, augments the tax base and empowers the county to enact essential infrastructure enhancements while improving the overall quality of life.

Nearly a decade ago, Osceola County embarked on a mission to redefine its economic destiny. This mission entailed forging partnerships spanning the local and global landscape, involving leaders in the high-tech industry, academia, and influential figures in federal and state government, as well as numerous community partners. This collective endeavor gave rise to NeoCity, a master-planned 500-acre technology campus.

BRIDG and SkyWater Technology are important partners in the journey, including the recent DoD award. The organizations’ leadership is key in the development of NeoCity as a center attracting investment, researchers, and manufacturers from around the world.

With this award, the county’s campus will spearhead the nation’s semiconductor advanced packaging manufacturing – a key component of the United States’ efforts to base next generation microchip manufacturing on the U.S mainland. This award includes components to develop the needed workforce for production and will ultimately lead to more jobs for Osceola County and Central Florida.

The substantial, and strategic, investment of hundreds of millions at NeoCity is yielding tangible results. Just last year, Osceola County and its partners were recipients of a substantial $50.8 million Build Back Better Regional Challenge Grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Furthermore, the County-led coalition has emerged as finalists for a prestigious and lucrative National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines grant.

The DoD’s Cornerstone award carries the potential to infuse Osceola County job creation efforts, heralding a profound community transformation. This shift marks a departure from a historical reliance on agriculture and tourism, charting a path toward a more diversified and prosperous future.

The county and its partners continue to expand capabilities. The coalition behind last year’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge Grant known as Building Central Florida’s Semiconductor Cluster for Broad-Based Prosperity continues plans for workforce development, job creation and improvements to the fabrication facility. County Manager Don Fisher is chairman of the coalition.

The federal government has called for a stronger, more secure domestic semiconductor industry. In response to such a critical national need, Osceola County, in collaboration with BRIDG and SkyWater Technology, put forth a groundbreaking and comprehensive set of proposals aimed at establishing cutting-edge capabilities in wafer preparation and advanced packaging in its application for the Cornerstone award.

Osceola County will contract with BRIDG and SkyWater to implement the award. The BRIDG-led activities focus on chip design and processes while the Osceola County and SkyWater-led activities will focus on offering domestic advanced packaging services. Both of these capabilities are required for the advanced packaging of microchips. Additional details about SkyWater’s program and the technology being developed at the Center for Neovation will be released upon the fully executed contract with the county.

These proposals continue to establish the infrastructure for Osceola County and the Center for Neovation to grow its leadership position in semiconductor microchip packaging and integration — providing for enhanced functionality and improved operating characteristics.

Nearly a decade into its vision for NeoCity, Osceola County and its partners will continue to reap the rewards of its vision and investment.

In its announcement, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) DoD note that the award is part of Re-shore Ecosystem for Secure Heterogeneous Advanced Packaged Electronics (RESHAPE) efforts, and directly supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s initiatives to strengthen America’s supply chains as outlined in Executive Order 14017, America’s Supply Chains.

Community partners continue to collaborate at NeoCity and share their support:

SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman

“The DoD’s collaboration with Osceola County, SkyWater Florida and BRIDG signifies a unique public-private partnership that supports domestic advanced packaging and helps to secure the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. The county and SkyWater will enter into an agreement for SkyWater to execute all aspects of the initial award of up to $120 million and stand up our fan-out wafer level packaging capabilities. We are pleased this partnership continues to fortify the efforts of the County to build a thriving community in Central Florida designed for advancing the next generation of technologies here in the U.S.”

BRIDG Chief Technical Officer, Dr. John Allgair

“Recognizing the strategic importance of growing and maintaining U.S. owned microelectronics advanced packaging capabilities, BRIDG has been working with Osceola County, SkyWater, the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment team and additional partners to establish an exemplary regional manufacturing capability key to multiple industries, along with the supporting workforce development, This investment will complete the equipment buildout for the Center for Neovation, positioning the center and its current and future partners to drive sustainable, exemplary and inclusive regional economic development in these critical manufacturing fields.”

BRIDG President Jim Vandevere

“BRIDG joins our partners in celebrating this momentous award that leverages an established and growing semiconductor ecosystem at NeoCity. With little to none of the critical advance packaging activities currently taking place in the U.S., BRIDG is proud to help fill a role in this vital sector to address economic and national security vulnerabilities.”

ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN) — The Orlando Regional REALTOR Association (ORRA) hosted its second annual State of Real Estate event for Orange County on April 17, bringing together industry professionals, policymakers and community leaders to examine the region’s housing market and economic outlook.

Held at ORRA’s headquarters in Orlando, the event focused on the evolving dynamics of residential and commercial real estate across Central Florida. Discussions centered on housing affordability, economic growth and long-term regional development.

Speakers and Panelists

  • Lawrence Yun — Chief Economist, National Association of REALTORS
  • Maria Henson — Senior Director of Market Research & Insights, Visit Orlando
  • Racquel Asa — Head of External Affairs, Central Florida Expressway Authority
  • Amy Mercado — Property Appraiser, Orange County
  • Chris Atwell — Moderator, 2026 ORRA President

Industry experts said Central Florida’s economy continues to grow, though at a more measured pace. While housing and stock market wealth remain near record highs, job growth is softening, consumer sentiment has declined and loan defaults are rising — creating a market shaped by mixed signals.

Panelists noted the housing market has shifted into a more stable phase compared to the rapid growth seen during 2020 and 2021, with more balance and sustainable conditions.

Despite short-term fluctuations, long-term fundamentals remain strong. Orange County’s tax base has grown significantly since 2023, while the broader Central Florida region has experienced a 23% population increase over the past decade, with more than 1,200 people moving to the area each week.

Infrastructure and tourism were also highlighted as key drivers of future growth. Officials pointed to major roadway investments by the Central Florida Expressway Authority and the region’s continued strength as a tourism hub, drawing more than 75 million visitors in 2024.

“We’re operating in a global economy where interest rates, supply chains and migration policies all influence what happens at the local level,” said ORRA CEO Cliff Long.

Economic Trends Show Mixed Signals
Experts emphasized that strong asset values are being offset by softer job growth and declining consumer confidence.

Housing Market Enters Stable Phase
The market has transitioned from pandemic-driven volatility to a more balanced and sustainable pace.

Growth, Infrastructure and Tourism Drive Future
Population growth, infrastructure investment and tourism continue to support long-term expansion in Central Florida.

ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN)Walmart, in partnership with the Hispanic Chamber of Metro Orlando, will host the 2026 Walmart Road to Open Call pitch event on May 21 in Orlando, offering small businesses the opportunity to present their products directly to Walmart buyers.

The Orlando event is the only Florida stop in 2026 and is part of a nationwide initiative designed to support small business growth, expand supplier diversity and strengthen U.S. manufacturing.

OPPORTUNITY FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

The Road to Open Call serves as a pathway for entrepreneurs to connect with Walmart’s sourcing team, refine their pitches and prepare for the company’s annual Open Call event in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Applications are open through May 1 at 10 p.m. EST. A select group of applicants will be chosen to participate in the Orlando event, where each business will receive a 30-minute, one-on-one pitch meeting with a Walmart buyer, along with feedback and mentorship.

Top participants may earn a fast pass to Walmart’s annual Open Call, where they can pitch for potential placement in Walmart stores or online.

FOCUS ON U.S.-MADE PRODUCTS

Walmart’s Open Call is the company’s largest sourcing event for products made, grown or assembled in the United States. The program is open to businesses across industries, including food and beverage, beauty, safety and consumer goods.

“The Road to Open Call provides a powerful platform for small businesses to grow and scale,” said Mark Espinoza, senior director of public affairs at Walmart. “By connecting entrepreneurs directly with our sourcing teams, we’re helping bring innovative, U.S.-made products to customers while supporting American jobs and local economies.”

LOCAL IMPACT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Local leaders say the initiative strengthens both entrepreneurship and the regional economy.

AdventHealth Opens 2026 Community Impact Grants to Address Central Florida Health Needs

Published

on

ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN)AdventHealth is now accepting applications for its 2026 Community Impact Grants, aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations working to address critical health needs across Central Florida.

The grant program partners with community-based organizations to expand initiatives that improve quality of life and promote long-term sustainability. Eligible nonprofits serving residents in Orange, Osceola, Seminole and South Lake counties are encouraged to apply.

Applications are open from March 30 through April 16, with funding expected to begin Jan. 1, 2027.

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS

The grants are guided by Central Florida’s Community Health Needs Assessment, which identifies key challenges impacting residents’ well-being.

“Our annual Community Impact Grants are guided by Central Florida’s Community Health Needs Assessment to ensure we are investing meaningfully where our neighbors need us most,” said Tricia Edris, senior vice president of innovation and partnerships for AdventHealth Central Florida. “We are honored to align our resources and stand as partners to create measurable, lasting impact across the region.”

PRIORITY AREAS FOR FUNDING

The 2026 grant cycle will focus on three key areas:

  • Housing instability
  • Transportation
  • Food insecurity

These priorities reflect social determinants of health that can significantly influence a person’s ability to live a healthy and stable life. Community organizations often serve as the first line of support for residents facing these challenges.

COMMUNITY IMPACT AND PARTNERSHIPS

Past grant recipients say the program has helped expand opportunities for residents. Crystal Davidson highlighted the impact of the initiative on workforce development.

“Schools and colleges often don’t have the funding to provide introductory workforce programs that expose students to new career opportunities,” Davidson said. “Through partnership grants like the one AdventHealth is providing, we’re able to give young people hands-on experiences that help them discover their potential and build a path toward a meaningful career.”

AdventHealth will also host an informational webinar to guide organizations through eligibility requirements, funding priorities and the application process. Interested applicants can learn more and apply through the AdventHealth website.
