ORLANDO — Today, Charlie Crist, candidate for governor of Florida, unveiled the second part of his new Affordable Florida for All policy plan aimed at tackling the housing affordability crisis that has been plaguing the Sunshine State, which is keeping the dream of homeownership and housing security out of reach for millions of Floridians.

Crist, who is on a statewide tour to discuss affordability issues across Florida, was joined by housing advocate and former Lt. Governor nominee, Chris King, in announcing the second of his three part plan.

Crist’s Affordable Florida for All plan promises to address housing affordability by fully funding the Sadowski Trust Fund for affordable housing and repealing the law that permanently cut the fund in half. Crist’s emphasis on housing affordability comes as Florida’s housing market catches up to places like New York and Virginia despite wages increasing at a slower rate than the national average.

Affordable Florida for All includes a vision to expand and strengthen down payment assistance programs for veterans, young families, and first generation homeowners looking to purchase their home. And once in office, Crist plans to appoint a Housing Czar to work with local governments to meet housing affordability goals across the state.

“Families across the Sunshine State are being crushed by an outrageously high housing market that is squeezing out lifelong Floridians from being able to own their own slice of Florida. Meanwhile folks that are renting have to work an average of three minimum wage jobs just to cover their monthly payment. It’s unconscionable,” said Charlie Crist. “Unlike Governor DeSantis, our Affordable Florida for All plan doesn’t turn a blind eye to the crisis our state is facing. The future Crist Administration will not step aside as politicians slash funds and resources for working Floridians while our neighbors suffer. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, Floridians should be able to afford to live in Florida. Period. And our campaign is ready to do everything we can to make this a reality.”

Crist’s announcement comes on the second day of his weeklong, statewide Affordable Housing for All Tour. Charlie has spent the week hearing from everyday Floridians, elected officials, community leaders, and activists from across the state, fighting to make the Sunshine State a little more affordable for all.
