ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN) – Today, the Daisy Morales campaign announced in a press release that US Congressman Darren Soto endorsed her for a second term in the Florida House. Parts of Congressman Soto’s and Representative Morales’ districts cross, representing the same constituents.
Representative Daisy Morales will run in Florida House District 44, after the Florida Legislature approved maps to split her House District 48 into Districts 43 and 44.
Democratic incumbent state Representative Geraldine Thompson will not seek re-election in House District 44. Thompson is running for her old state Senate seat in District 11.
Congressman Soto’s released statement touched on everything from Morales’ time as a Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor to State Representative. According to the press release, he has consistently supported her throughout her political career.
Statement by Congressman Darren Soto:
“I proudly endorse State Representative Daisy Morales’ campaign for a second term in the Florida House. She will diligently serve the people in the newly drawn House District 44, as she did in House District 48.
“For nearly eight years, I’ve endorsed Daisy Morales’ winning campaigns for State Representative and Orange County Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor because she was the best candidate; fighting for higher paying jobs, access to healthcare, protecting our environment and delivering results during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In her first year, Rep. Morales’ demonstrated that she’s able to work across the aisle, passing 58 bills with bipartisan support which were signed into law by the governor.
“I also applaud Rep. Morales for filing a House Resolution recognizing April 2nd as Puerto Rican Heritage Day in Florida, honoring accomplishments by people of Puerto Rican descent.
“She will be a strong advocate in Tallahassee for Lake Nona, Meadow Woods, Hunters Creek, Williamsburg and Dr. Phillips communities; and especially for the Orange County tourism industry.
“I look forward to working with Rep. Morales on federal resources needed for House District 44, and addressing issues important to the Puerto Rican community in Florida and Puerto Rico.”
State Rep. Morales’ released statement spoke highly of Congressman Soto and his longtime support.
Statement by Representative Daisy Morales
“I’m honored to have earned Congressman Soto’s endorsement for nearly eight years in my campaign bids for State House and Countywide office,” said Morales. “Congressman Soto has always made a big difference in Floridians’ lives because he leads with conviction, principle, and bold, new ideas in Florida and in Congress. His advice and several visits with me at the Florida Capitol were invaluable, and I’m excited to have his endorsement.”
Representative Morales, who has countywide name recognition, will face Jennifer Rita Harris, a Democratic political newcomer, in the August primary election. No Republican is currently running in this race.
