Shea’s Return Leads Whitecaps to a Critical Win in Orlando

FNN SPORTSORLANDO, Fla. (FNN SPORTS) – In what could be the most important home game of the season, former Orlando City Lion Brek Shea might have put a serious dagger in the playoff hopes for his former club. Shea’s third goal of the season in the 53rd minute helped the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 2-1 victory over Orlando City.
Shea took a perfect pass from Freddy Montero to give the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead. Shea beat his former teammate Joe Bendik to give Vancouver a much needed win as they fight to climb up the Western Conference standings.
Orlando City could not capitalize on the efforts of their offense on Saturday night. They kept putting pressure all game on a Vancouver team who had to make a cross-country flight to play a game in Orlando after playing a game at home on Wednesday night against Seattle. They kept Whitecaps goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic on his on toes all night. Orlando had possession of the ball over 72% of the time throughout the game and completed almost 85% of their passes.
“A little bit of a loss of words because I just never felt like I’ve been in such an unlucky situation. We just can’t seem to get anything to go our way. I feel like if we could get something to go our way right now we could get a lot of good results because we’re playing well. But the struggle continues.”- Orlando City Head Coach Jason Kreis after his team could not get the victory at home
After Cyle Larin closed the deficit to 2-1 in the 62nd minute, City kept putting pressure on the net. They had a sequence where Scott Sutter put an attempt on the net after a corner kick and City had at least three chances to put the ball in the goal and the final attempt in that sequence went wide.
Larin’s team-leading 10th goal of the season came after a beautiful crossing pass from Yoshimar Youtun into the box. Larin came on at halftime to spark an offense that had issues getting to the net.
Vancouver opened the game’s scoring by getting an own goal from Tommy Redding in the 9th minute. Redding was trying to win a cross sent into the goalkeeper’s area, but his heading redirection put the ball past Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
Orlando City begins a four-game road-trip starting in Foxboro on Saturday as they take on the New England Revolution. They return to Orlando on September 27th as they host the Portland Timbers.
